New Zealand electronic producer Montell2099 has released his long-awaited debut album DUALITY on December 12, establishing a major milestone after years of calculated refinement. The project digs into the push-pull between his public persona and real life as Montell Pinny, drawing directly from his early years in the small Māori community of Katikati while honoring the influences that shaped him. Known for collaborations with RL Grime, Netsky, 21 Savage, Mura Masa, and Alison Wonderland, plus official remixes for Lorde, Charli XCX, Diplo, and Trippie Redd, Montell2099 has built serious international weight. Tracks like “Hunnid on the Drop” have cleared six million streams, he became the first New Zealand artist booked for Tomorrowland, and his visual work with Human Person, the collective behind Travis Scott and Post Malone projects, alongside standout performances like the Lake Alta set have solidified his reputation as a versatile force in electronic music.

Spanning nine tracks, DUALITY moves smoothly across trap, drum and bass, dubstep, house, and hyperpop, showcasing Montell2099’s refusal to stay in one lane. It kicks off with ‘2099_RADIO’, a rapid-fire montage slicing through previews of everything ahead, then slams into ‘I MIGHT!’, a straight-up trap heater designed for festival destruction. ‘ENDLESSLY’ leans into nostalgic dubstep territory with emotive vocal cuts, while ‘SOMETHING 2 SAY’ layers pop and R&B vocals over aggressive bass, pulling from SAHXL’s “Overtime (Acoustic).” ‘LUV TONIGHT’ channels classic dubstep grit, ‘ENERGY!!’ accelerates into relentless drum and bass, and ‘PEACE OF MIND’ veers toward hyperpop before easing into a stripped-back interlude. The closer ‘HAIL’ settles into smooth, melodic tech-house, providing a clean landing after the intensity.

DUALITY feels like both a summary of Montell2099’s journey and the launch of his next chapter, built during a deliberate reset focused on sharpening his sound and reconnecting with his origins. The record confidently asserts his shape-shifting production style while embedding New Zealand cultural elements deeper into the electronics sphere, marking his strongest statement yet as one of the country’s most impactful electronic exports.
